DEADMANS PUB NEWS
Junior Ranks Ball 2008

For the first time in over a decade, the Junior Ranks Ball will hosted by HMCS DISCOVERY. The 2008 Junior Ranks Ball will be held on the evening of Saturday the 8th of March, 2008. Tickets are priced individually at $45.00 CAD or $75.00 for members with guest. Tickets can be purchased through the mess or online at www.jrball.ca.

The Annual Junior Ranks Ball is sponsored by 39th Canadian Brigade Group and the Canadian Naval Reserves. This historic social event is attended by military NCM's, spouses and special guests from British Columbia and our neighbours in the State of Washington. This year's ball will also be extended to Junior Constables of the RCMP in recognition of their cooperation in efforts overseas in Afghanistan. Members and guests have the opportunity to enjoy an evening of music, cuisine, dancing and entertainment that cannot be duplicated in the civilian world.

Various forms of entertainment will be featured throughout the evening. Throughout the dinner we will showcase light dinner music, regimental marches, highland pipers, as well as a few surprises. Immediately following the dinner the evening gets even hotter as we dance the night away into the wee hours.

News Years Levee

Levee - The first recorded levee in what is now Canada was hosted by the Governor of New France,Charles Huault de Montmagny, in 1646. This custom originated in Europe, where formal morning assemblies were held by princes or persons of distinction. The word levée derives from French and means rising (as from bed). In Canada, levees are traditionally hosted by representatives of the Crown. In recent years, many mayors and military commanders have hosted levees, on or after January 1st. For more information on the origin of the New Year's Levee click here

Join us at noon on January 1st at HMCS Discovery for this time honoured Canadian Forces tradition and partake in some drinks and socializations. This is a paid social event so please dress is your 1A's (Ceremonial Dress).

Remembrance Day Ceremony - November 11, 2007

We must remember. If we do not, the sacrifice of those one hundred thousand Canadian lives will be meaningless. They died for us, for their homes and families and friends, for a collection of traditions they cherished and a future they believed in; they died for Canada. The meaning of their sacrifice rests with our collective national consciousness; our future is their monument.

- Heather Robertson, A Terrible Beauty, The Art of Canada at War

All members are required to attend the Remembrance Day ceremonies held on Nov 11th at the Cenetaph on Victory Square. Following the ceremony members are invited back to HMCS Discovery for food and drinks to be followed by our traditional touring of other messes and legions around town. The night is expected to end with drinks at The Blarney Stone. All welcome!
